Savannah Finley is a 2025 WISCIENCE STEM Public Service Fellow and a graduate student pursuing a PhD in environmental chemistry and technology with a minor in environmental policy. She has a BS in chemistry with a minor in mathematics from
Michigan State University. In her free time, she enjoys outdoor activities, rock wall climbing, volleyball, pickleball, and horror movies.

What has been your favorite part of this program so far?
There are many parts of this program that I’ve loved, but I’ve really enjoyed connecting with my peers!

What are you looking forward to doing in this program?
I’m looking forward to my practicum and exploring environmental policy hands on.

What are some of your career goals and how do you think this program will help you achieve them?
I would love to go into government doing environmental remediation work. I think this program aligns with my goals because in order to do this type of work, I need to better understand the policies governing my role as an environmental chemist.

What is one of the most valuable things you have learned as a Fellow?
I learned that collaboration is very important in solving real-world problems—research or science communication or public opinion alone isn’t enough. Each is necessary!

What is something surprising or unexpected that you’ve experienced as a Fellow?
I was surprised how challenging science communication can be! It doesn’t seem hard to just explain a topic (especially one that you know the ins and outs of and spend so much time on!) but it truly can be very complicated!

What excites you about community engagement?
I am really excited to get my hands dirty with policy work. It’s different to learn about it and actually do it—so I’m really looking forward to that.
