We are thrilled to announce the winning designs of the 2024 WISCIENCE Sticker Contest!
“Science for Sustainability” was this year’s theme. Students were encouraged to explore how scientific innovations and principles can lead to a more sustainable future.
We received more than 30 entries—each with a unique approach and style. Entries were evaluated based on artistic quality, creativity, interpretation of the theme, and suitability for WISCIENCE. Our judging panel was comprised of undergrad students, grad students, and staff from WISCIENCE and the Wisconsin Energy Institute.
The 4 winning artists created beautiful designs that interpret the theme in thoughtful, original ways. Each winning student received a prize of a backpack with art supplies, a water bottle, and a few other goodies.
Want a sticker or two for yourself? Starting in January 2025, you can pick them up for free at the BioCommons!
Here’s a little more about the artists and what inspired them.
Charlotte Knihtila
My name is Charlotte Knihtila, and I am a sophomore majoring in graphic design and pursuing certificates in business and art history. I was born in Phoenix, AZ, but I have lived most of my life in Wisconsin. Outside of creating art, I love to watch YouTube videos and read manga. My inspiration for the design was based on research I have done previously on different types of sustainable or “green” technologies, as well as the UW–Madison Office of Sustainability page.

Alysson Lee
My name is Alysson Lee and I am a junior at UW–Madison studying biology. My artwork was inspired by teachings from my incredibly insightful Agro 370 Grassland Ecology class, which I highly recommend to peers. With proper management and care, our grasslands provide us with a variety of services such as flood mitigation, soil formation, nutrient cycling, and fresh food and water. Therefore, when our grasslands are healthy, our soils are healthy, our air and water quality are healthy, our crops are healthy, our animals are healthy, and we are healthy. Grasslands are essential to our sustainability efforts here in Wisconsin and beyond.

Rochelle Li
I’m majoring in computer science and I’m from Fremont, California. I like to play video games, draw, and code. I was inspired to make this sticker from all the sustainability actions UW–Madison has taken to make the place a bit greener, from recycling food from dining halls to diving into more research about sustainability.
Stephanie Zhang
Hello! I’m Stephanie and I’m currently a junior with a double major in neurobiology and psychology. I love to swim or ice skate during my free time and you can usually find me at College Library grinding on chemistry. When I first saw that the theme for this year’s sticker contest was sustainability, I instantly thought of a greenhouse. With science pertaining to such a wide variety of fields and communities, I thought it’d be fitting to have many elements included in this “house” of science.
