Why should I join the STEM Transfer Mentor Network?

Transferring to a new institution can come with unique academic and social challenges. The STEM Transfer Mentor Network connects you with experienced peer mentors who can help facilitate your transition to UW–Madison. These mentors are students with first-hand experience transferring institutions—and they can offer invaluable guidance as you navigate the ups and downs of your first year at UW–Madison.

In addition to support from your STEM Transfer Mentor, you’ll also have the opportunity to get to know other STEM transfer students at UW—peers who are experiencing some of the same things you are.

How do I join the STEM Transfer Mentor Network?

You can join during open registration at the beginning of the semester. Just fill out the registration form, and you will be placed with a peer mentor (as long as space is available). After you register, you will be contacted by WISCIENCE with details about next steps.

Note that registrations will be reviewed on a rolling basis. We hope to support as many students as possible, but spots are first come, first served.

How is the STEM Transfer Mentor Network structured?

Your mentor will check in with you regularly, both virtually and in-person. You and your mentor will choose how and how often you want to check in, based on your needs.

Every 2-3 weeks during the semester, mentors will organize group events for all students in the network. Some events will be opportunities to take breaks from academics and build community, while others will focus on research and career-related resources. You are also welcome to suggest network events or facilitate group outings.

How can the STEM Transfer Mentor Network help me acclimate to campus?

In addition to the mentoring and peer relationships you can develop in this network, you’ll also participate in a variety of program-wide events that can provide you with opportunities to expand your community, connect with campus organizations, and gain exposure to a range of STEM resources and opportunities on campus.
