Fátima Sancheznieto was a Scientific Teaching Fellow in 2020 while working as a postdoctoral scholar at the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) at UW–Madison. Today, she continues to work in education research at ICTR. In her free time, she enjoys gardening, writing, and cooking.
What was your favorite part of this program?
The practicum. Engaging with the students and getting to put into practice what we learned was a great experience.
What is something surprising or unexpected you experienced as a Fellow?
I think the COVID-19 pandemic surprised and challenged us all, but it was great to be part of a group of early adopters of online best practices and have curricula that were readily adaptable. Having a plan meant we were ready to implement online in the fall while a lot of instructors at UW were scrambling to adapt all of their lessons.
How have you applied the skills and knowledge from this program in your career?
The principles of scientific teaching are incredibly valuable to anyone who wishes to go into STEM education or education research. What we learned about formative and summative assessments continues to be useful in my survey design and role as an evaluator.
