Tina Wu was a WISCIENCE Scientific Teaching Fellow in 2020 while pursuing a PhD in plant pathology. Today, she is Assistant Director for Recruitment and Partnerships at Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. She has the privilege of leading the NSF REU Summer Undergraduate Research in Geoscience & Engineering program, as well as developing recruitment initiatives to support the school’s diversity, equity, and inclusion vision and goals. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, reading, and exploring new cities and countries through food.
What was your favorite part of the Scientific Teaching Fellows program?
Developing my own curriculum as well as collaborating with an amazing team of educators.
What was one of the most valuable things you learned as a Fellow?
As a Scientific Teaching Fellow, I gained so many important skills related to inclusive pedagogy, evidence-based scientific teaching, how to plan and design curriculum, and how to work effectively within teams. These are skills I continue to implement in my roles post-graduation.
What is something surprising or unexpected you experienced as a Fellow?
My cohort taught during the COVID lockdown, and while challenging, it made me a more versatile instructor.
How have you applied the skills and knowledge from this program in your career?
I continue to apply scientific teaching and inclusive pedagogy to the initiatives and programs I develop and lead. The skills and knowledge I gained from this program continue to inform how I approach recruitment and retention in higher education and guide how I work with staff, faculty, postdocs, and students.
