Silas Miller is a 2024 WISCIENCE Scientific Teaching Fellow and graduate student in biochemistry. He previously studied biochemistry, biophysics, and molecular biology at Whitman College in Washington state. Outside of school, he likes running, backpacking, and going for walks.
What has been your favorite part of the Scientific Teaching Fellows program so far?
I have really enjoyed getting to know the other Fellows and building a community of people who are also enthusiastic about teaching science!
What are some of your career goals and how do you think this program will help you achieve them?
I would love to teach science to undergraduates while running a research group where I can directly mentor undergraduate students in the lab. This program will develop my skills in teaching and interacting with students, and help me practice iterative revision of my teaching and mentorship approaches based on evidence I collect about their effectiveness.
What excites you about teaching?
I think science is so much fun to learn about, and I want to share my enthusiasm with students! I have always found teaching and mentorship to be incredibly fulfilling—I want to spend my time and effort helping others to satisfy their curiosities and achieve their goals.
