STEM Transfer Mentor Groups

Help make your transition to UW–Madison a success by joining a STEM Transfer Mentor Group!

Combining monthly small group meetings with one-on-one support, these groups are an opportunity to connect with other transfer students, get guidance from an experienced peer mentor, and learn about being involved in STEM on campus. It’s a flexible and fun way to start finding your place at UW–Madison.

Why should I join a STEM Transfer Mentor Group?

Transferring to a new institution can come with unique academic and social challenges. STEM Transfer Mentor Groups connect you with experienced peer mentors who can help facilitate your transition to UW–Madison. These mentors are students with first-hand experience transferring institutions—and they can offer invaluable guidance as you navigate the ups and downs of your first year at UW–Madison.

In addition to support from your STEM Transfer Mentor, you’ll also have the opportunity to get to know other STEM transfer students at UW—peers who are experiencing some of the same things you are.

How do I join a Transfer Mentor Group?

You can join during open registration at the beginning of the semester. Just fill out the registration form, and you will be placed in a group (as long as space is available). After you register, you will be contacted by WISCIENCE with details about next steps.

Note that registrations will be reviewed on a rolling basis. We hope to support as many students as possible, but spots are first come, first served.

How often will groups meet?

Groups will meet in-person about once a month, and your mentor will check in with you individually between meetings. There will also be opportunities to attend relevant campus events as a group.

Note that groups are designed to be flexible to accommodate participants’ needs. The structure and frequency of meetings as well as communication style can be determined by each group (or individuals).

How can a Transfer Mentor Group help me acclimate to campus?

In addition to the mentoring and peer relationships you can develop in this group, you’ll also participate in a variety of program-wide events that can provide you with opportunities to expand your community, connect with campus organizations, and gain exposure to a range of STEM resources and opportunities on campus.

Does WISCIENCE have other resources for transfer students?

Yes, we have a Transfer STEM Immersion program with events, informal gatherings, and an online community. Learn more.
