Course Number: INTEGSCI 230

Credits: 2

Prereqs/Requirements:

  • Permission from instructor is required

Instructor:

Leading in STEM has unique issues and challenges, so invest in the training you need to excel as a leader and support your peers. Build practical peer leadership and mentoring skills as part of a supportive community of STEM student leaders.

Exploring Discipline-Based Leadership is designed to prepare students for various STEM-based peer leadership positions. Effective peer leadership entails more than a title or position; one must consider the context of their leadership, increase their awareness of the experiences of their peers, and engage in actions that inspire positive change. In this course, students will be introduced to scholarship in the fields of leadership and educational equity, develop critical thinking around diversity and inclusion in STEM and higher education, and gain practical skills to effectively lead their STEM peers.

Part of the WISCIENCE Peer Leaders program

This course is required for new peer leaders in the WISCIENCE Peer Leaders Program and is open to all undergraduates who are involved in other peer leadership positions across campus, as space allows. Students do not need to hold a current peer leadership position but should identify a position that they are interested in preparing for. Instructor permission is required to enroll.
