Kelsey Perry was a WISCIENCE Scientific Teaching Fellow in 2020 while pursuing an MS in biochemistry. Today, she teaches full time at a community college. Outside of work, she enjoys backpacking, hiking, and cross-stitching.
What was your favorite part of the Scientific Teaching Fellows program?
My favorite part of the program was being able to gain experience with all aspects of teaching—from course design to delivery and evaluation—and being fully supported along the way.
What was one of the most valuable things you learned as a Fellow?
Because my cohort was happening in 2020, I learned valuable skills about teaching and engaging students in an online synchronous course that I never would have learned otherwise. These skills translate almost 1:1 in the in-person classroom and allow me to engage students in in-person courses more meaningfully online as well.
How have you applied the skills and knowledge from this program in your career?
As I look at a new course I am going to be teaching, I look to backward design to build up what I want and need the course to be. This has kept me focused and on point with what students should be getting out of the course.
What excites you about teaching?
I enjoy seeing students improve and become empowered by their learning. When I can help a student see how they can be better and then see them accomplish their best, I am fulfilled as a teacher.
